Interview mit Eric Nylund - Die Halo-Roman-Autor
Question: I read the Halo Books many times, they were always fascinating. Not even because they answered questions or because they are written very well, but the wonderful idea-compatible universe, which Bungie created. What do you think, led you
to write those halo-novels?
Eric: the opportunity come up to write the Halo prequel novel _The Fall of Reach_ when Eric Trautmann in Microsoft's Licensing group and others had struck a publishing deal with Del Rey...and they needed a HALO novel fast. I was working down the hall from Trautmann at Microsoft Game Studios at the time, and we had worked toghter on Crimson Skies before. He knew I had written many science fiction and fantasy novels previously, so he asked me if I'd be willing to write a HALO novel. I said yes ...after which he told me he needed it done in seven weeks!
Question: I believe that everybody who played Halo, has built his own perception to interpret the world. What were your thoughts when you first played Halo and when did it happen?
Eric: As I said before I was working at Microsoft Game Studios, and I had the opportunity to see HALO before it was released. I knew it was something special back then (although I had no idea just HOW BIG halo would become).
Question: I already told you that I wrote some nice storys, too. I always wondered what banal things induce me to raise an interstellar war. Has something inspired you as much as Halo, while you were writing the novels?
Eric: For me it's the characters. I really connect with the soldiers on the front line and their stories--especially how the original Spartan-IIs were selected and how they all grew up together.
Question: The most Halo fan's want to look behind the scenes. How good was your contact to Bungie and how many background information did you have?
Eric: I had access to the most current version of the HALO story bible, and Bungie reviewed the initial ideas, the novel outline, and reviewed and commented on drafts of the final manuscript--so there was lots of contact and advice directly from the creators of HALO.
Question: There are rumours that you have a contract with Microsoft for two more Halo Novels, is that true?
Eric: No - Bungie has been very busy getting HALO 3 finished. It has not been decided what the next novel will be about or who will write it.
Question: Many people talk about the strange and breathtaking "Halo-Feeling". How would you describe it?
Eric: EPIC
Question: I remember the first stories I wrote pretty closely. And one thing specially I want to know is: How old were you, when you started writing and in which genre did you jump in?
Eric: I was getting my PhD in chemistry when I decide to start writing. I read every book in out library on how to write and then started a fantasy novel, PAWN'S DREAM ...which I finished, and sold soon thereafter.
Question: Would you still dare to make them public?
Eric: As I said, it was made public. That novel is still, I think, pretty good for a first attempt. I get fan mail all the time from readers who want a squeal.
Question: The Halo Community is extremely active when they produce Halo Fan Fictions. There are endless variations and qualities. Did you ever write smaller Halo-Stories before the Novels, or did you start with the big ones?
Eric: No - I was asked to write the prequel novel- that's how I started with my Halo fiction.
Question: Let us get away from Halo for just one time and let us talk about another question. You wrote many novels. Chose the one you prefer.
Eric: My best novel so far is the one I just finished, MORTAL COILS. It should be out Summer or Fall of next year.
Question: A final question like that can't simply be missed. What did you think about Halo 3? Does it fit your expectations? Was it an inspiration?
Eric: Yes, it was wonderful. I hope Bungie and Microsoft's Licensing Department give me a chance to expand on the ending one day.
Question: Okay, Mr Nylund. Thank you very much for this interview, ti was delightful!
Eric: Thanks!
